Counselling Approach

Unconditional positive regard; I believe everybody should treat others in the way we want to be treated.

A belief in my clients can inspire them to reframe their previous outlooks on life. Unconditional positive regard and respect for the client can help them to see possibilities in their lives previously not considered. Each client I have worked with is completely different even though they may have a similar diagnosis. I understand that the client is more than that diagnosis.

Previous case study

As a recovery coordinator in the United States, I encountered co-workers speaking negatively about certain clients, which puzzled and angered me. This marked my first exposure to client negativity. One such client, (whom I will name Colin) diagnosed with bipolar disorder, shared his passion for writing and designing letters. To address his frustrations with his mother, I assigned him homework to craft a letter and design it, with the instruction not to send it. In our next session, Colin underwent a remarkable transformation, having cut his hair and shaved. He presented me with a designed picture and shared the letter he had written for his mother. This experience taught me that collaborative efforts between counsellors and clients can bring about positive change. I didn’t change Collin's outlook myself, he had reframed his own outlook.
